Liposuction has come a long way since it first hit the cosmetic surgery scene in the 1980s. In those days, the procedure involved a good deal of heavy-duty movement of the cannula (the wand that is inserted under the skin to suction out the unwanted fat) under the skin. This lead to some pretty severe tissue trauma and bruising.
But newer techniques have made liposuction much less invasive. The latest technique is the FDA-approved Tickle Lipo, which we offer at Diamond Medical Spa and Vein.
What is Tickle Lipo?
In this new liposuction technique, the difference is in the cannula. In Tickle Lipo the cannula has two movements — it vibrates and rotates. These movements help break up and loosen the fat. Plus, they have the side effect of making the patient laugh while the procedure is ongoing. This is caused by the movement of the cannula. This new cannula also helps Dr. Yates to avoid damaging adjacent blood vessels, which is the cause of bruising.
What happens during the procedure?
Unlike other types of liposuction, with Tickle Lipo the patients are very relaxed. The procedure requires only local anesthesia and the patient can sit up, watch a movie, talk on the phone, or listen to music. And it is so much less invasive than other techniques; patients can return to work in just a couple of days.
Does it really tickle?
Yes, the vibrating, rotating cannula creates a tickling sensation in the patient. This isn’t an override of the local anesthesia, it’s just a side sensation that patients actually enjoy.
